On Apr. 29, 2018, there will be a full moon appearing in the sky, however; this moon will be a special one. Apparently this full moon will shine a hue of pink in the night sky.
The “pink” moon has graced the skies before but just like its counterparts, the: blue, orange, and yellow moon, it still raises the question if the moon is really turning the color pink or is it just in our imaginations.
What Is The Pink Moon
A full moon has been characterized as a lunar phase when the moon appears fully illuminated from Earth’s perspective. There have many myths and legends that correlate with the full moon such as, insomnia, insanity, and the most popular folklore of lycanthropy, which is when a human can transform into a werewolf.
A full moon in April is also known as a “pink” moon due to the Native Americans associating the April Full Moon with the blossoming of the sphinx flowers that are also pink. The April Full moon has other nicknames such as: Egg Moon, Full Sprouting Grass Moon, and Full Fish Moon.
The egg moon is associated with animal mating that takes place during the spring, the full fish moon is linked to when the fish spawn in the spring, and the full sprouting grass moon is related to the vegetation and grass that sprouts in spring.
Will It Actually Turn Pink?
The highly-anticipated phenomenon could be a different color this year due to the weather and other factors that have caused the moon to change its tint when it rises over the horizon.
Last year, the pink moon appeared in the sky on April 11, and footage showed the moon turning pink as it rose over the Atlantic Ocean, then orange, and finally yellow as it made its place amongst the stars.
The best time to catch the moon’s rising will be around 7:30-7:45pm EST for those who reside on the East Coast within the tri-state area. It could fall on the night of April 30th or the early morning of May 1st, depending on where observers are located.
No, you are not a dreamer, Pink moon is on its way and its going to rise this month. “Someday the world will live as one”. https://t.co/xsVLaIgAYh pic.twitter.com/WpZcue8OFP — ria_si (@2018Ria) April 26, 2018
