Blain Padgett, key member of the Rice Owls football team, found dead in his apartment – New York Daily News

Blain Padgett, a defensive end for the Rice University football team, was found dead in his apartment on Friday. He was 21.

Concerned after Padgett didn’t show up for a morning workout, his roommates went to his apartment and made the grim discovery, the Houston Chronicle reported.

An official cause of death has yet to be determined.

“Our team is devastated by the news,” new Rice head coach Mike Bloomgren said in a statement. “All of my thoughts right now are how best to help Blain’s family and his teammates in this very difficult period.”

Padgett, a 6-5, 250 redshirt junior, was expected to be a key contributor for Bloomgren’s 2018 squad.

Injuries slowed him down last season as he was limited to just three starts. The previous season he led the defensive line with 41 tackles.

“Our entire athletic department is in mourning over the loss of Blain Padgett,” athletics director Joe Karlgaard said in a statement. “Blain was a great friend and teammate and the sense of loss is overwhelming to his teammates, his friends, but most importantly to his family, who are in our thoughts and prayers. We will do everything in our power to provide assistance to our student-athletes in this incredibly difficult time.”

Coming off a 1-11 season, the Owls are scheduled to open spring drills on Monday.
