Julia Budd defends her belt by defeating Talita Nogueira

Here is how the Bellator 202 bout between Julia Budd vs. Talita Nogueira played out inside WinStar World Casino and Resort.

On July 13, Bellator touched down in Thackerville, Oklahoma. In a featherweight championship bout, Julia Budd defended her title against Talita Nogueira.

Budd (11-2 MMA, 5-0 Bellator) made her MMA debut in the Strikeforce Challengers series. The Canadian-born kickboxer went 2-2 in the Strikeforce promotion, but her two losses were to Amanda Nunes and Ronda Rousey.

Budd then signed with Invicta and won her next four fights. However, while in Invicta, Budd did not receive the opportunity to fight the number one-ranked 145-pound female fighter Cris Cyborg.

Budd then moved on to Bellator, winning the inaugural featherweight title over Marloes Coenen in her fourth fight in the organization. She defended her title nine months later against Arlene Blencowe.

While talking with MMA Fighting, Budd discussed her place in woman’s MMA and the possibility of fighting Cyborg.

“I believe she’s the best 145-er in the world and I’m No. 2,” Budd said. “That’s what I believe. I’m the Bellator world champion, she’s the UFC world champion, but we’re the best in our division and I believe I’m the most well-rounded and because we never fought, I can’t really say how that would go or how that looks.”

Nogueira (7-0 MMA, 1-0 Bellator) is undefeated in her professional fighting career. This is only her second fight outside of her home country of Brazil. Her first six matches all took place in Sao Paulo.

Nogueira has finished all of her fights. Two have been by TKO and she has five submissions. Nogueira is the 2011 World Jiu Jitsu Champion and may look to take the fight to the ground in order to pull off the upset.

Round 1

The fighters came out and Nogueira continuously changed levels. Budd appeared hesitant to engage and outside of a few leg kicks the fighters stayed outside of striking range.

With two minutes left in the round Nogueira threw a body kick and Budd caught the strike. Budd elevates Nogueira and gets the takedown. She lands in side control and the first significant strikes are landed.

Nogueira attempted to roll for a leg but ate a few hard shots instead. The round ended with Budd on top and throwing shots. After a very slow start of the fight on the feet, it ended with Budd winning the first round convincingly. FanSided scored it 10-9 Budd.

Round 2

Thirty seconds into the second round and the first punch of the fight was landed. Budd threw a straight right and a left hook that hit its mark.

Both fighters stay on the outside until Budd closed the distance and pressed Noguiera against the cage. For two minutes Budd beat Nogueira up. She landed hard knees and elbows.

Budd landed a hard knee that caused Nogueira to crumble to the mat. Budd followed her down and continued the beat down. Nogueira was supposed to have the advantage on the ground, but Budd neutralized any attack. FanSided scored it 10-8 Budd

Round 3

Once the round started, Budd stalked Nogueira and landed hard strikes. After a brief clinch Nogueira went to her back and Budd landed a hard punch.

Nogueira had Budd in her full guard and switched to a butterfly. She tried to elevate Budd and go for a leg lock, but Budd’s defense and strikes made Nogueira’s attack non-effective.

The fighters worked their way back to their feet briefly. Budd then threw a hard leg kick and Nogueira dropped her hands. Budd landed a couple of hard punches. Nogueira went to the ground and Budd followed.

Budd threw punches and Nogueira tried to cover up. Nogueira was defenseless and the referee stepped in to save her with less than minute left in the third round.
