Patriots vs. Jets results: New England defense spooks Sam Darnold in shutout win

Midway through the first half Monday night, Jets quarterback admitted the Patriots defense had him “seeing ghosts.”

Over the next couple of hours, the vicious New England defense ensured Darnold and Jets fans will be having nightmares about the game for a while. The Patriots were dominant in a 33-0 win, crushing the optimism that surrounded the Jets following last week’s win over the Cowboys.

Darnold’s final statline was appalling: 11-for-32 passing for 86 yards and four interceptions. He also lost a fumble. New York finished with 154 yards of total offense and 12 first downs. Coach Adam Gase will be hard-pressed to find a positive to take away from the game.

For the undefeated Patriots, it was just another game. New England now has two shutouts in the first seven weeks, and only three touchdowns have been scored against its defense all year. Quarterback Tom Brady turned in the usual solid performance, completing 31 of his 45 passes for 249 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The Patriots set the tone with an opening drive that lasted nearly nine minutes and ended with the first of three short touchdown runs from running back Sony Michel. Then, the defense went to work, and by the end of the game, New England had the best point differential (+175) through seven games since the 1920 Buffalo All-Americans.
