Roger Federer begins grass court season with Halle Open victory over John Millman | Tennis | Sport

The last time these two players met Millman stunned Federer in four sets at the US Open.

Federer looked to make a fast start to the match but Millman withstood the attack-minded gameplan from Federer and took the opening set to a tiebreak.

However, the nine-time champion upped his level significantly to win the breaker 7-1.

In the second set, Federer finally earned a chance to break Millman and on the second opportunity finally broke to lead 4-2 and although he had to save a break point when serving for the match, the 37-year-old came through to book a second-round clash against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Thursday.

“I think I look back [down] memory lane a little bit [here],” said Federer.

“I see how many good moments I’ve had here, I see how much success I’ve had. The fan interaction [is special]. I feel like we know each other, they know what they get from me and I know what to expect from them.

“It makes me feel really good and makes me play good tennis.”

16:00: This is Federer’s first grass court match of the season as he builds towards Wimbledon. And he just loves playing at Halle.

“I feel great, to be honest. I am happy to be on the grass, regardless of if I played good or bad on the clay, or if I didn’t play at all,” said Federer.

“I always feel happy coming to this surface and this part of the season. I have always loved playing here in Halle for so many years.

“This is my 17th time playing this event.”
