Sam Ehlinger bestowed upon Phil Steele magazine cover

A big time national magazine, from Phil Steele, had a Texas football star featured on a regional cover this year with quarterback Sam Ehlinger.

Yet another big time magazine cover bestowed the greatness that is rising junior Texas football signal caller Sam Ehlinger entering the summer months of the 2019 college football off-season. This time, it was Phil Steele’s 2019 College Football Preview Magazine, that is among the nation’s most well known for going on two decades now.

Although magazine covers aren’t as important as they used to be, it’s still a sign of the status level that Ehlinger attained from his breakthrough sophomore campaign last year. Ehlinger was the first quarterback in the history of the Texas football program to throw for 25 touchdowns and rush for 15 in the same season.

However, Ehlinger was on the Texas regional version of the Phil Steele magazine on the cover. He was featured alongside three other college football players. Those other three players included Houston Cougars quarterback D’Eriq King, Texas A&M Aggies wide receiver Jhamon Ausbon, and TCU Horned Frogs wide receiver Jalen Reagor.

With the rise of rating systems like ESPN’s Power Football Index and SB Nation’s S&P+, there is less need for people to snag the national magazines like Phil Steele and Athlon Sports. But these are still fun reads to pick up when you are in a place where a magazine could trump a phone or computer.

However, this cover also brings up an interesting point about the wide receiver and quarterback talent at the college level in the state of Texas this year. King is one of the very best Group of Five quarterbacks in the nation in 2019 and Ehlinger has to be one of the three or five best in the Power Five.

It would be easy to see Texas Longhorns rising senior star wide receiver Collin Johnson grace the cover of this Phil Steele magazine. But it looks like each team could only have one representative on this version of the regional cover for the national magazine.
